Practical guide

How to choose substrate for an aquarium plan

Substrate type and depth should follow livestock, plants and maintenance needs.

Start with function

A planted tank, a tank with digging fish and a layout designed for easy vacuuming may require very different substrates.

Use average depth

For a slope from front to back, enter the average depth. The calculator gives volume and estimates weight from the product density.

Verify the material

Not every stone, sand or soil is aquarium-safe. Check intended use, effect on water chemistry and preparation instructions.

Important: Adapt actions to the species, equipment instructions and actual measurements. For signs of illness, consult a veterinarian experienced with aquatic animals.
